Nation caught in grip of looming WNBA strike.
Sports fans across the country wait anxiously in hopes a strike is averted as players and owners in the Women’s National Basketball Association negotiate contract terms this week. A WNBA strike has the potential to create significant financial losses for tavern and sports bar owners throughout the country. Concerned sports bar owner, Robert Miller said, "Other than the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, PGA, and NASCAR, what else is there for people to watch?" WNBA officials say a strike would be unfortunate because the league is gearing up for a ratings war with the National High School Jump Roping Association. Losing a battle of this magnitude would threaten to erode the WNBA’s worldwide fan base of almost 200 people comprised primarily of players’ families. Those close to the negotiations report the primary negotiating obstacle is the Owners' offer to provide free uniforms in lieu of player salaries.
