Country Day students learn importance of appearing to give back
CINCINNATI, OH - A special program has been put in place at Cincinnati Country Day School to help students learn the importance of appearing of giving back to the community. The exclusive Indian Hill school hopes that the program will help present their students in a positive light.
“Our students realize how privileged they are to be part of CCD,” said program advisor Nancy Wilkes-Sterne. “With that privilege comes the responsibility to put on an appearance of charity, goodwill and giving back.”
The students began by watching numerous powerpoint presentations of people repairing inner city playgrounds, building birdhouses for the elderly, and planting gardens in dilapidated urban parking lots. CCD Lacrosse Coach Mark Ferrar-Pierpont explains, “We hope our students will learn how to compose themselves if they ever need to be photographed in such a situation. For example, I pointed out the need for wearing middle class style clothing instead of designer labels in the event of a PR photo at the sight of a home repossession or mass corporate layoff.”
The program appears to already have had an impact on at least one student. While buying snacks at the Terrace Park UDF, Country Day Junior Mallory Huff-Seligman was given change from her purchase that included several pennies. “I remembered all the powerpoints about making sure people see you giving back,” Mallory explained. “So, since it was underprivileged Terrace Park and all, I told everyone in the store, ‘On behalf of Cincinnati Country Day School, I have a penny, so I shall leave a penny. If you need a penny, you may procure a penny.’ and I generously placed my change right there in that cup. I hope the people in that community can take advantage of the opportunity I presented to them.”
